Mike Pascuzzo has Sadly Passed Away: The South Jersey track and field community is grieving the loss of Mike Pascuzzo, a legendary athlete, coach, and mentor, who passed away at the age of 63 in the Poconos. Affectionately known as “Scooze,” Mike’s influence shaped generations of athletes, leaving a lasting legacy in the sport.

Remembering Mike Pascuzzo

Mike’s journey in track and field began at Lenape High School, where he excelled as a high jumper. In 1981, he set an indoor high jump record of 6-11 at Glassboro State College, a mark that remained among South Jersey’s best. His athletic prowess continued at Hagerstown, where he won a JUCO national title, and at the University of Maryland, where he earned NCAA All-America honors. His career-best high jump of 7-5 ¼, achieved in 1992, remains among the top 100 performances in U.S. history.

Following his competitive career, Mike dedicated himself to coaching. As a longtime coach at Lenape High School, he mentored standout jumpers like Musa Cooper, Dan Mitchell, and Ty Coughlin. His passion for the sport extended beyond his team, as he frequently supported athletes from various schools, embodying true sportsmanship and mentorship.

Mike’s commitment to athlete development led him to establish Vertical Adventures, a premier summer camp that has run for over 30 years. Bringing together elite athletes to mentor young jumpers, the camp became a key training ground for future stars in track and field.

Nearly two decades ago, Mike introduced the annual beach pole vault competition in Atlantic City, an event that quickly became a regional favorite. Combining the thrill of pole vaulting with the scenic Jersey Shore, this unique competition continues to attract top athletes and fans alike.

Beyond track and field, Mike’s entrepreneurial drive led him to found All-American Courier Services, inspired by his frustration with slow deliveries. His business acumen mirrored his dedication to the sport, as he tirelessly promoted track and field events and supported athletes across the region.

Mike Pascuzzo was scheduled to be honored at the South Jersey Track Hall of Fame banquet, highlighting his profound impact. Tributes from the community have poured in, with the Philadelphia Jumps Club stating, “Mike poured so much of himself into the track and field community.”
